Brian Massumi’s the Autonomy of Affect. This has been published in several places, but most notably in his book: Parables for the Virtual.
For some reason, there has been a psycho / spatio / temporal war between the book and the scanner. For some reason (early childhood aluminium consumption) I keep on missing the odd pages. The best I can do is replace these articles with the complete ones tomorrow when I am near both the scanner and the book itself. In the meantime, I have added a couple of articles to round things off. The two critical articles are from the book of essays: Interact or Die!. Unfortunately a quick search revealed that it is not available at the U of M or the U of W. So you will have to rely on my scans for the meantime.
files are now update. Please refresh your cache when you download.
Here are some of the readings that I have discussed in the class:
This is only a partial list, I will need to scan a few more this evening.
Some I will ask you only to read certain sections:
Ninian Mellamphy’s translation of the first part of Mode de L’existance de L’object technique. This has been circulating the internet for quite a while. Although it is online, there is nothing that says that it is available for public distribution. Please read: Chapter One and John Hart’s preface. download
Gilbert Simondon’s, On the Genesis of the Individual: This is from a publication from the eighties Zone: Incorporations. It’s quite a remarkable book, well worth the cost if you can get a hold of it.download
Mikail Dufresne’s, article on the technical and the aesthetic object. This is NOT the best article on Simondon, but Dufresne does set the parameters rather well for opening a discussion.download
Gilles Deleuze’s review of Sur la Mode de L’existance de L’objet Technique. Its only about 3 pages, but three pages that are worth a CAREFULL inspection. He dives into several of Simondon’s concepts with the depth it merits. You should really have your dictionaries out for this. download
An from Maturana and Varela’s, Autopoeisis and Cognition. This is a VERY deep reading and its only a part of a much larger argument that has significantly changed the way we interpret phenomenological thought. Be forewarned, while it may seem to directly address Simondon’s thoughts there is a healthy debate that is arguing otherwise. download
Manuel Delanda’s section from a Thousand Years of Non Linear History. Although he does not adress Simondon directly, this can help you get a good feel for what is at stake when Deleuze, and Simondon discuss the questions of craft, industry and technology. Delanda teaches at Columbia School of Architecture (at least as far as I am familiar) and he channels Deleuze quite well. I am not a fan of secondary sources, but I consider Delanda to be an exception. You may also want to check out some of the following lectures he gives: lecture at the tate modern or his lecture on the question of sustainability at the university of minnesota. here
Finally, a reading by David Pye: he makes no reference to Simondon, but I am convinced that he was aware of it: download
more to come tomorrow morning: BON LECTURE!!!
my apologies to everybody. my webhost, unfortunately had a corrupt DNS server which caused numerous problems that took the entire weekend to resolve.
Please find below the following texts for your reference and the readings for the next four seminars. you will find:
The original hand written letter by Simondon himself: download
A transcribed version in text form in the original French: download
Finally the translated version. Several things about this version. This is one of many versions of the translation to come. Please feel free to annotate and comment wherever you can, this includes grammer. Your reading will be a valuable contribution to a solid translation. Finally, this document is a DRAFT and NOT for public distribution. In order to do so, we would have to have permissions from the publisher there are strict academic issues of rights and properties at play here. It is only intended to be distributed to the thirteen of you. download
